Hammer — how far to trust it, and where to fold
What Hammer is
A long lower wick with a small body at the top. At a low, it signals a bounce.
It also goes by hammer candle.
What you actually look at
- The lower wick is at least twice the body
- There is almost no upper wick
- It appears at the end of a downtrend
When to admit you were wrong
The signal dies if the next candle breaks the hammer's low.
Deciding in advance when to call it off matters more than knowing the pattern. That level is also where your stop belongs. An analysis without an invalidation never finds out it was wrong.
The mistake beginners make
Reading a hammer in the middle of an uptrend as a bounce signal. Location decides the meaning.
Try it yourself
The chart above is a real 4-hour stretch of SOL/USDT. The blue line sits at the level this pattern hinges on. Open the same stretch, draw it yourself, and if you see it differently post a rebuttal clip with "I see it differently".

If you call every similar shape Hammer, only the ones that worked stay in memory. You have to count the failures too, and I rarely see anyone do that.

Since scepticism came up — that is exactly why I count. I write the condition down first (e.g. "The signal dies if the next candle breaks the hammer's low." counts as a failure) and fill in the outcome later. Memory flatters you 100% of the time.

One experience to add — I lost *more* after learning Hammer. Once I had a shape I knew, I pasted it onto everything. I started taking trades I would never have taken while ignorant.

My answer to the question above: I do not decide in the moment. What I do when I see Hammer was written before the session opened. Decide mid-session and emotion is in there 100% of the time.

Nobody mentioned timeframe. Hammer on the 15-minute and Hammer on the daily do not weigh the same. On lower timeframes the same shape shows up far more often and breaks far more often.

Other way round for me: by the time something like Hammer is visible, I think it is already late. If everyone can see the shape, everyone who was going to get in is already in. I look for the opposite side instead.
